Mazda puts sports coupe projects on hold, focusing on new engine technology
The planned development of a new Mazda sports coupe with a rotary engine has been suspended indefinitely due to financial issues, according to an interview with Mazda's technical director, Ryuichi Umesita, in Autocar. He stated that the company remains committed to the idea of launching such a vehicle eventually.
Currently, Mazda's funding priorities have shifted towards developing the SkyActive-Z piston engine lineup, modular platforms for electric vehicles, and hybrid drive systems. In the current year, a substantial reduction in the timeline for transitioning from combustion engines to electric vehicles has occurred, favoring a more balanced overall approach to drive technology.
Recently, Mazda reestablished a specialized department focused on rotary engines. The main objective for this team is to ensure that the rotary engine complies with the latest carbon dioxide emissions standards. They expect to create a viable technology that will allow the rotary engine to be utilized for powering the wheels rather than just recharging hybrid batteries within the next two to three years.
Mazda showcased its latest development in rotary engines during the Tokyo auto show, featuring a hybrid liftback capable of producing a combined power of 510 hp from its two-rotor engine and electric motor. Additionally, it includes a unique system that captures carbon dioxide from exhaust emissions, minimizing atmospheric release and allowing for repurposing.
Umesita concluded by affirming that sports cars are central to Mazda's identity and that the brand will continue to pursue opportunities in this automotive segment.
